The upper mantle geoid for lithospheric structure and dynamics

چکیده
Abstract Geoid anomalies offer crucial information on the internal density structure of Earth, and thus, its constitution dynamic state. In order to interpret geoid undulations in terms depth, magnitude lateral extension lithosphere upper mantle, effects lower mantle need be removed from full (thus obtaining residual ’upper geoid’). However, how achieve this seemingly simple filtering exercise has eluded consensus for decades solid Earth community. While there is wide agreement regarding causative masses degrees > 10 spherical harmonic expansions geoid, those contributing < 7‐8 remain ambiguous. Here we use analysis recent tomography models joint seismic‐geodynamic inversions derive a representative including contributions low degrees. We show that contains important 5 6 as arising coupling between long‐wavelength lithospheric sublithospheric convection pattern. Importantly, 3 l 8 do not power‐law behaviour (e.g. Kaula’s rule), which precludes standard techniques spectral domain. Our model will useful studies i) structure, ii) topography viscosity, iii) lithosphere‐asthenosphere interactions iv) global stress field within associated hazards.

Crustal and Upper Mantle Density Structure Beneath the Qinghai-Tibet Plateau and Surrounding Areas Derived from EGM2008 Geoid Anomalies
As the most active plateau on the Earth, the Qinghai-Tibet Plateau (TP) has a complex crust–mantle structure. Knowledge of the distribution of such a structure provides information for understanding the underlying geodynamic processes. We obtain a three-dimensional model of the density of the crust and the upper mantle beneath the TP and surrounding areas from height anomalies using the Earth G...
متن کاملReceiver functions in the western United States, with implications for upper mantle structure and dynamics
[1] Investigations into mechanisms driving surface tectonics commonly search for mantle sources, but few observations constrain flow in the upper mantle and transition zone. Here variations in the upper mantle discontinuities at 410 km and 660 km below the western United States are revealed through mapping depths of compressional-to-shear wave conversions recorded by broadband seismometers. The...
متن کاملUpper mantle structure of the Saharan Metacraton
The 500,000 km Saharan Metacraton in northern Africa (metacraton refers to a craton that has been mobilized during an orogenic event but that is still recognisable through its rheological, geochronological and isotopic characteristics) is an Archean–Paleoproterozoic cratonic lithosphere that has been destabilized during the Neoproterozoic. It extends from the Arabian–Nubian Shield in the east t...
متن کاملLayered mantle convection: A model for geoid and topography
The long-wavelength geoid and topography are dynamic effects of a convecting mantle. The long-wavelength geoid of the Earth is controlled by density variations in the mantle and has been explained by circulation models involving whole mantle flow. However, the relationship of long-wavelength topography to mantle circulation has been a puzzling problem in geodynamics. We show that the dynamic to...
